From a large Gloucester farming family, and a keen rugby player, I learnt much of my medicine from family illness, breeding pigs and personal injury! I am Bristol trained and graduated with Honours in 1999. Determined to be GP, I joined the local GP training scheme and was privileged to have Dr Gerwyn Owen as my PMG trainer in 2002. I have never really left. I remain convinced PMG is one of the best places to be a GP, the team is superb with varied talents and the patients are a never-ending source of interest and delight. Following Gerwyn’s lead, I became an educator, and have the pleasure of training the next generation of GPs and allied health professionals.
If I have specific interests, it would be in holistic general practice, elderly care, and diabetes. I also enjoy skin lesion identification and joint injections.
Outside of medicine, I remain a loyal, if frustrated, supporter of Gloucester Rugby. I am married to a secondary school politics teacher, have two adopted teenage children and a mini-schnauzer called Otto- no wonder one of my patients questioned if I had been doing nights- sorry no… that grey-haired, hollow-eyed look is simply the toll of modern family life.
I love being a GP; it remains a hugely privileged job. I am just happy I am doing it with a group of people I trust and respect. Long may they let me do it.
